On behalf of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA), Dr. Paul Hacker, Vice Chair of Council and I, Sanjay Acharya, Chair of OMA Council are pleased to welcome you to the resource centre for OMA Council Delegates.
In an attempt to streamline access to documents, we have created a Council Delegate Webpage which will provide you with the relevant information you will need to support you in your role as an OMA Council Delegate.
Please note that pre-registration is required for events for all Council meetings. If you plan to attend any sessions or luncheons, please indicate that you wish to attend these events when registering.
You can find agenda and materials for all Council events on our Council web page and on the OMA Council app. In an attempt to reduce the OMA’s overall carbon footprint, all Council materials are available only in electronic format.
If you have any comments or questions regarding Council, please contact OMA.Council@OMA.org.
Sanjay Acharya, MD
Chair, OMA Council
Dr. Sanjay Acharya graduated from the Memorial University of Newfoundland before completing his postgraduate training in Anaesthesia at the University of Ottawa. He currently practices in Ottawa at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He was the President of the Medical Staff there for the last 10 years and has just been appointed Chief of Staff. He serves on the hospital board and is also a past president of the OMA Ottawa Branch Society. Dr. Acharya has served as Vice-Chair of OMA Council for several years and in 2018 was elected Chair. In addition to those duties, he is the Medical Director of the Chronic Vent Ward at St Vincent’s Hospital, a retired provincial coroner, and he covers the ICU at the Ottawa Heart Institute.
Dr. Paul Hacker received his Doctor of Medicine before completing the Family Practice – Anesthesia Program, both at the University of Toronto. After practicing in Lindsay, Ontario, as a general practitioner, anesthetist and hospitalist, he practiced as a hospitalist in Ottawa before transitioning to full-time focused practice in community palliative medicine. He has served in a number of administrative/leadership roles and is now the Lead Physician of the Community Palliative Medicine Associates (Ottawa). He serves on the Section on General and Family Practice Executive as a Member-at-Large. He was previously a Council delegate for District 8, a member of the OMA Governance Committee and a member of the Council Governance Steering Committee Planning Group. In 2018, he was elected Vice-Chair of Council and currently sits on the Council Steering and Governance Committee.
Council Orientation involves several areas. 1) Council Delegates are invited to attend the Council Orientation Session scheduled during the Annual Meeting of Council (see below); 2) A series of Orientation Videos on topics relevant for delegates are currently being developed and will be posted on the OMA Council Delegate Website; and 3) Participate in a mentorship program.
Attending Council can be overwhelming for new members. In an attempt to support you in your role, newly elected Delegates, i.e. 2 years or less, are encouraged to contact OMA Staff who will match you with a Delegate or OMA Member with several years of experience at Council. The mentor will work with you throughout the Council meeting to answer any questions you may have and will guide you through the meeting, including the motion process, should you be interested.
If you are interested in working with a mentor please contact OMA.Council@OMA.org.
